Troubleshooting Cybugs...

Most problems associated with any electronic kits involve missed instructions or poor quality solder joints or missed instructions, and care must be taken to ensure that the robots are assembled as accurately as possible. 

Using a voltmeter set to measure low dc voltages, compare your cybugs voltages at the three major IC's under the stated conditions..

Make sure the jumper immediately behind IC3 is in place as shown above.  This may be replaced with a on-off switch if you wish.

bulletCheck that you have placed the jumpers in  locations J1 and J2 and soldered them!

 

bulletMake the following measurments on IC1 and IC2 with the CdS photocells completely covered and the potentiometer fully clockwise... ( with respect to black battery clip wire ground )
Pin 1 0.00V >4.8V Pin 8
Pin 2 1.7 to 3V varying ( this is the timing capacitor charging) <0.1V ( jumping over 1V when pulsing ) Pin 7
Pin 3 0 1.7 to 3V varying ( this is the timing capacitor charging) Pin 6
Pin 4 >4.8V 3.3V Pin 5

 

bulletMake the following measurements with respect to black-wire ground on IC3. Keep both potentiometers completely clockwise.  Keep feeler wires in middle of sensor loop so the Scarab does not detect bumping an obstacle.
Pin 1 0V >4.5V Pin 16
Pin 2 4.2V 4.2V Pin 15
Pin 3 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins Pin 14
Pin 4 0.0V 0.0V Pin 13
Pin 5 0.0V 0.0V Pin 12
Pin 6 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins Pin 11
Pin 7 0.0V 0.0V Pin 10
Pin 8 >7.5V 0.0V Pin 9

Make the following measurements on  IC3 again, this time with both feelers touching the sensor loops and potentiometers fully clockwise.

Pin 1 0V >4.5V Pin 16
Pin 2 0.0V 0.0V Pin 15
Pin 3 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins Pin 14
Pin 4 0.0V 0.0V Pin 13
Pin 5 0.0V 0.0V Pin 12
Pin 6 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins 0.0V with quick surge when motor spins Pin 11
Pin 7 4.2V 4.2V Pin 10
Pin 8 >7.5V 0.0V Pin 9
